We’re sure you’re by now you know the world is coming to an end in about 6 months. So do you really want to spend these precious moments drinking the same old Saison? We sure don’t. We want to drink a unique, experimental, once in a lifetime Saison, and so do you. Well, you’re in luck because the 6th installment of the “12 Beers of the Apocalypse” series by Elysian Brewing is in now available in BC, and it’s a Saison. But it’s not your everyday, run of the mill Saison. It’s the Elysian Wasteland Elderflower Saison!
That’s right. The Wasteland Elderflower Saison is the latest release from the “12 Beers of the Apocalypse” series. We’re very excited to bring this beer into BC, but we were only able to get a VERY small shipment. We only got a handful of cases and kegs. So if you see it, don’t wait around because it’s gonna be gone.
Wasteland is a very unique Saison brewed with dried elderflowers, and fermented with French Saison yeast. It’s 6% ABV and Elysian describes it as the perfect nuclear winter summer seasonal.
The Elysian Wasteland Elderflower Saison pours a slightly hazy, copper colour. It has a peppery, zesty, fruity nose of pear, apple and orange. The taste is similar to the nose up front, but around mid palate you get a very sweet, lycee like flavour, with a dry, slightly tannic finish. The aftertaste is slightly bitter and reminiscent to that tannic aftertaste you get from wine. It’s light to medium-bodied, and mildly carbonated for a Saison.
Overall the Wasteland Elderflower Saison is a great addition to the “12 Beers of the Apocalypse” series. A lot of people probably won’t pick up on the elderflower (Especially those who aren’t familiar with Saisons/Farmhouse Ales). But if you’re curious where the elderflower comes through, it’s that fruity, lycee like sweetness, and that tannic, floral finish in the beer. Make sure you don’t serve the beer too cold because it’ll mute the elderflower flavours.
Once again, we were only able to get a VERY limited amount of the Elysian Wasteland Saison. So if you see it around, make sure you purchase it. So far the only liquor stores that received their order is Brewery Creek, 16th Street Liquor Store, and Viti Wine and Lager. On tap you can find this beer at St. Augustine’s, Alibi Room, Portland Craft, and Blue Canoe Waterfront Restaurant.
This is a very unique Saison you have to try before the world comes to an end. So go out and give this wonderful beer a try.
