It’s that time of year again! It’s time to count your blessings, loosen up the belt and gather around the table with your family for Thanksgiving Dinner.
When we picture Thanksgiving dinner, a large roasted turkey is definitely the centerpiece. Around the turkey you’ll see stuffing, ham, carrots, yams, beets, mash potatoes, gravy and some buns. Also, no Thanksgiving dinner would be complete without apple pie, sweet potato pie, pecan pie, or of course, pumpkin pie.
So what beers will you pair with all these dishes? Well, we have some great recommendations.
If you’re going to be enjoying turkey, then you need to pick up a bottle of the Rogue Juniper Pale Ale. It’s saffron in colour with a smooth malt balance, and a floral aroma with a dry spicy finish. The juniper berries in the beer compliment the spices on the turkey and enhances the flavours.
If your family prepares the ham, stuffing, gravy and hearty vegetables very rich and full of flavour, then the Elysian Night Owl Pumpkin Ale is your friend to accompany you with those dishes. This rich and spicy pumpkin ale will match the intensity of the dishes with its medium body, and compliment all the herbs and rich flavours with its blend of spices.
Pairing the ham and stuffing, etc. with a pumpkin ale is a great choice but make sure you switch beers when Aunt Thelma pulls out the pumpkin pie. Pairing pumpkin pie with pumpkin ales may seem like a good idea but the spices just end up fighting each other. When it comes to pumpkin pie, leave it to the stouts.
The Alameda Black Bear XX Stout and Elysian Split Shot Espresso Milk Stout are great beers to pair with pumpkin pie. The sweetness of the beers really brings out the cinnamon in the pie and pairs nicely with the coffee flavours in the beer. Both beers will also pair great with pecan pie and sweet potato pie.
Just remember that with Thanksgiving dinner, you want to go with the malt forward beers instead of hoppy beers (sorry hopheads). Biere de Gardes and Marzens are also great for this occasion as well.
Happy Thanksgiving everyone!
Cheers!
